I joined the Duo Mobile team in 2020, working on redesigning the app. This redesign is the most significant update for Duo Mobile in 8 years and successfully launched in the app store in October 2021.

In this project, I led the overall UX vision, design, and implementation for the Duo Mobile Android app, working closely with our Android engineers and collaborating closely with our PM, iOS designer, user researcher, accessibility expert, UX writer, and management.

Our goal for the redesign was to make the Duo Mobile app easier for users to enroll and authenticate and enable our users to be self-remediate in the app, rather than call the help desk.

We started with understanding users' current workflows and pain points. After gaining insights from the research synthesis, we incorporated them into our design iteration.

We have 12 million users, and we serve them all the same layout and experience regardless of their needs and goals they want to accomplish in our app. In the new design, we improved the account experience to accommodate all three types of our users.

We know one of the most significant friction points for Duo is when a user gets that new phone over the holidays. She is so excited she forgets about Duo right up until they need to access their work email after the vacation ends. We designed an instant restored experience for users to get their accounts back quicker and considered all the use cases.

Since Duo Mobile is part of the Duo 4 cross-platform authentication experience, keeping the style consistent with other Duo products was central to my work. Also, as an essential tool for keeping login secure, we want the app to be efficient, easy to use, and not distracting. I leveraged our Duo Tellaro Design System for desktop and Android Material Design to create the Android style. It's clean, simple, and familiar to Android users.

Designing for an application that is used by millions of users in their daily lives requires a high level of dedication, thoroughness and understanding of user behaviors. Every design concept and detail is tested and validated by many rounds of design review and user testings. I feel very lucky to be part of this process and have had the chance to work on this great product.
